4 Signs That You Need to Upgrade Your Internet Plan

A working internet connection is a must in this day and age, and one that you don’t have to worry about is something of a luxury. Even if your connection is slow or it cuts out now and then, sometimes you’ll find the solution is simply to move the router somewhere all your household’s devices can access it easily.

Knowing that, when should you write off certain internet connection problems as part and parcel of your plan, and when should you take them as signs it’s time to upgrade your plan? Here are some things to look out for.

There’s a noticeable drop in speed when more people use the internet

Knowing your household’s internet needs is one of the best ways to choose the plan that’s right for you. However, what you may not realise is that these needs can and will change over time, especially if there’s a change in a household member’s online habits. For example, a new graduate may take advantage of the extra time they have to binge-watch TV shows, or you yourself started playing online games more often.

Whatever the circumstances, if you notice longer loading times, video streams buffering more often, or a lag in response times any other times, upgrading your internet plan is a good way to cope with those changes in online habits.

You experience bad connections on video calls

FaceTime, Skype, and Zoom rely a lot on an internet’s upload speed, but many internet plans have much slower upload speeds compared to their download speeds, especially older ones. This can mean delays and constant buffering when you’re on a video call, and you may even have to close other applications just to ensure the call doesn’t get dropped.

If this is something that happens often, it’s high time you consider upgrading your internet plan, especially if your current one has an upload speed that’s just a tenth of the download speed.

You’re being charged for extra data

When you first got an internet plan, you may have thought that you wouldn’t need a lot of data and so opted for an internet plan with a data cap, limiting how much internet you can consume. However, if you find that you’re billed each month for extra data, then this is a sure sign that you need to reevaluate your data usage.

You don’t have to upgrade to an internet plan with unlimited data, but at least upgrade to one that has a higher data cap, especially if it’s cheaper in the long run than paying extra data charges every month.

Your internet speed is slow but your bill is high

1000Mbps is the fastest internet speed possible in many cases, so unless that’s what you signed up for, you don’t have to just grin and bear it when you get an unexpectedly high internet bill, even accounting for extra data charges.

Know what to expect with your current internet plan, then see if you do get it or if there’s a discrepancy or two somewhere. If you notice this happening more often than not, it’s well worth considering upgrading your plan to one that gives you more value, or even changing providers for a plan that’s still affordable but won’t leave you with long loading times.

If you find that you really do need to upgrade your plan, the sooner you do it, the better. Fortunately, there are websites that make it easy for you to do so, from finding NBN internet plans that fit your needs to comparing and contrasting plans so you can select the best one for you.
